Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3^rd, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He later emigrated to Canada and then to the USA in the 1870s. He spent the rest of his life there. In America he worked with the deaf- mutes at Boston University. Bell started experimenting with ways of transmitting speech over a long distance. Bell and his assistant, Thomas Watson conducted many experiments. This led to the invention of the telephone. Bell demonstrated his invention to the public at countless exhibitions, and by the 1877 the first telephone was in commercial use. Alexander Graham Bell died in the USA in 1922.
